What Items Require Climate Controlled Storage?
Across the country and beyond, lots of storage companies offer climate-controlled storage units, also known as temperature-controlled storage.
This type of storage unit is ideal for certain items that you’d like to store, or if you’re planning to store items for a long period of time. Lots can happen to items in storage if they’re not stored correctly, that’s why it’s important to consider climate-controlled storage to counter moisture build-up and extreme temperatures.
If you’re wondering how you can ensure your items are in the same condition as when you first put them into storage, think about hiring a climate control storage unit.
What is climate-controlled storage?
Temperature-controlled storage is a specially designed unit that enables steady temperature and humidity levels to be maintained, usually between 12 to 30 degrees Celsius. This means that you can optimise the climate in a space so that they work together and don’t create excessive moisture.
Increased moisture is due to more heat and humidity, whereas lots of humidity means that there is more heat in the air. Similarly, if there isn’t a lot of humidity, then this means less heat is in the air.
By maintaining the right temperature and humidity at a steady and controlled level, the unit better protects the items inside.
What items require climate-controlled storage?
The majority of items in storage will benefit from climate control, however, there are a few types of items that will need to be placed into a climate-controlled environment.
These include: furniture (anything made of or contain: wood, metal, wicker, leather or upholstery), electronics, media and artwork, clothing, important documents, photos, musical instruments or tools or sports equipment, wine, antiques, collectables, medical supplies, cosmetics such as makeup and toiletries, household appliances, and bikes with leather seating.
When trying to decide if an item should be stored in a climate-controlled unit, it’s best to ask the following questions:
- Can the item get mould or mildew?
- Can it warp, crack, deteriorate or become discoloured from moisture?
- Would heat cause it to expand or contract?
- Is the item designed to be stored at a certain temperature?
- Is the item sensitive to extreme heat or extreme cold?
- Is it a rare, sentimental or valuable item?
Here are a few other reasons why items may need to be in a climate-controlled storage unit:
- Items are going to be stored in the unit for a long period of time
- If you live in a climate with high heat or high humidity
- If you’re storing collectables, valuables, antiques or irreplaceable items
When don’t you need a storage unit that’s temperature-controlled?
If you’re not storing items from the above list, or you are only storing items for a short period of time, then you should be fine with a standard self-storage unit.
