Moving Tips to Help You With a Change of Home

We all know that moving can be stressful, and with all the moving parts it’s easy to forget important things. Thankfully, Arden Self Storage are here to offer you some essential moving tips to help ensure your move runs smoothly.

Streamline

Even if you’re upsizing, moving is a great opportunity to streamline your possessions. It’s oddly gratifying to take a look at all of your things and really consider whether they are necessary and if you want to bring them with you to your new home.

This is a new start, so holding onto things that you don’t need is pointless. You can now take steps to curating your ideal home, which doesn’t include items you no longer enjoy or need. What’s more, this is a great chance to give back and donate your unwanted items. There is someone out there who could make better use of what you see as useless, so don’t hold on for holding on’s sake.

On the other hand, if there are items that you just can’t let go of, placing them in storage will allow for you to have less to move on ‘moving day’ and not clutter your new space immediately after moving in, making this a widely beneficial moving tip.

Changing Address

Once again, this falls in line with the importance of preparation. They do say that proper preparation prevents poor performance, and this is no less true than when it comes to switching to a new address. You need to consider post-forwarding, changing the delivery addresses for all of your online shopping, contacting the bank, contacting the DVLA (who can actually fine you for not notifying them of your change of address) and ensuring anything involving your address is updated.

It doesn’t end there, though. Do you have children? If so, you’re going to need to contact their current school to collate the appropriate paperwork in order to move them to their new school (if necessary), so this moving tip isn’t just going to affect outside sources.

Safety

While on the subject of renowned phrases, they also say that safety should come first and second. In this case, safety comes in the form of organising home insurance and ensuring all appliances are safe.

You should organise your home insurance in advance, which would ensure your coverage begins on the day you move into your new home.

On the topic of testing appliances, having a registered professional in to test your gas appliances will give you the peace of mind to relax into your new home. Also, you may not know this, but you are well within your rights to request the service records of all of the appliances in your new home. If you are not provided this, it could well be a red flag.

Miscellaneous

Of course, we haven’t covered everything in this blog post. There are plenty of other things that you need to consider. For example, there are little moving tips that will make your life easier when it comes to the big day.

Namely, consider labelling boxes and organising them in terms of rooms. It’s not ideal to have the kettle nestled in with your socks when you come to christen your new house with a cup of tea, that will mean lead to tearing through every box and creating a real mess – alongside some unnecessary stress.

Food is something that is often left to the bottom of the priority list, but little things like timing your final food shop so that you will be (effectively) out of perishables when it comes to moving will prevent the untimely explosion of a pot of cream in the back of the car. Alongside this, defrost your fridge a couple of days before you move so that it’s ready to go and there won’t be any chance of moisture leading to mildew and mould.

Moving Forward

Now that we’ve covered the big factors with our often forgotten moving tips – it’s time for you to implement them and encourage a smooth move. By remembering to declutter your possessions, organise the change of your address and ensure the safety of your home – alongside all of the other factors that pull into moving, like arranging the date and deciding how you will move your furniture – you are likely to drastically reduce your stress levels.
